Virtual 3D museum
MY ROLEProject lead, software architect, Unity/backend developer and designer
As project lead, software architect, Unity/backend developer and designer, I designed and developed a WebGL platform for curatable 3D exhibitions for the Museum für Sepulkralkultur.
As part of “Rethink, Rebuild, Restart!”, the museum wanted to extend its physical space with a participatory digital exhibition. I took responsibility for the concept, design and technical implementation, from kickoff through integration to testing and delivery.
The client could upload scanned exhibits, maintain metadata and curate the permanent exhibition independently. Geometry and textures could be reduced for web use. Visitors could move freely through the virtual museum, select objects from a repository, design their own exhibitions and share them with others.
I developed the 3D web application using Unity WebGL and WebAssembly, together with a custom server module for integration into the existing web platform. MongoDB and WebSocket communication formed parts of the data and integration layer. Authentication, user groups and administration features controlled use of the platform.
Four games developed by the Kunsthochschule Kassel were integrated into the platform. A later project phase covered porting the existing museum and its features to iOS, including adapting 3D models and textures.
Result: Implemented a virtual museum with freely configurable exhibitions, user management and integration into the existing web platform.
